STATEMENT

fter a career as a graphic designer and illustrator, I entered the book art scene with
a colorful and romantic homage to ballroom ■ With nights spent on
the ballroom dance floor, my days were filled with creating ARTIST BOOKS such as SWING!, DIRTY DANCING, RUMBA, URBAN MOTION and TANGO BAR .
Most now reside in public and private rare book collections ■

Three of these hand made, hand painted books were selected for
500 HANDMADE BOOKS (Lark Books) and Steve Miller, Juror,
states in his introduction:

“...standout piece, Alice Simpson’s URBAN MOTION, is a thrilling hip-hop-sequenced accordion structure that comes blasting out of a raw, painted cover. The brilliant hues, rough encaustic cover work, and ramped-up drawings lure the viewer in.”

My approach to SCULPTURE begins with the observation of the figure, an exploration of the gorgeous nuance that clay offers the artist, and the opportunity to play with light and shadow ■ With a background in illustration, my vision is disciplined to search for line that graces form, hair and fabric - - to capture the quality of watercolor washes - - to reveal how light creates drama ■
